Had this sagemcom router 3864AC model (white) that was rubbish when I had ADSL2. Dropouts as it aged and firmware was locked to the hill. So I got a d link from around the corner for 5 dollars that was worlds better than it. About two months ago I realised that NBN FTTB suddenly became available. I stupidly signed up again with Optus. The sent out a slightly newer model to this AC mdoel. They sent out the fast 3864V3HP. All I can say is,
now I remember why I got rid of that first ADSL router
what a load of junk this 3864V3HP is.
Its clear that nothings changed with Optus, they are still providing no name-cheap and nasty router/modem switches. The NBN connection to my gaming desktop is actually fine when it works, and blows ADSL out of the water. 50/20 all the time on NBN certainly beats 6/0.4 on ADSL. However, my first complaint is the constant dropouts in internet, mainly wifi. On all the connected devices it will often show singal bars but then an exclamation mark randomly, indicating the internet is not woking correctly, leading me to reconnect or sometimes reboot the router which is really annoying when it happens up to 8 times a day. The wifi speed is reduced in the other rooms but is OK, thankfully this new model is dual band (5GHz and 2.4). Another complaint I have is that the firmware is absolutely abysmal. Like, its laughably poor and simple and is the same as the first ADSL sagemcom I had. There is no bridging functionality to a different router, UI sucks and you cant even change the DNS servers to google DNS or anything else. I believe this is because optus block several websites with DNS level blocking. I got around this on my ADSL aftermarket router. Now you may think well why not just buy and use a VDSL aftermarket router. Here is the kicker.
Optus don't make their VOIP codes public. So if you want to use the home phone which comes with the internet plan, you have no choice but to use their modem. It is possible to disable the wifi functionality and pass it through a different router but you can't configure the other router itself afaik because the sagem has no official bridging functionality. ADSL works differently as the phone socket can be in the other room with a filter on the line, so Optus have little control over the type of modem you could use if you wanted the landline.
In all honesty if you don't mind slower wifi speeds and the wifi instability, it is an OK router for non-power users, especially via ethernet. But for anyone else, just don't sign up with optus. Go with an ISP that gives you more freedom. (I believe Aussie Broadband don't have this crap).
Purchased in June 2019.
We switch to NBN and optus is our internet provider, they supplied Sagemcom P/N 253795799 modem.
This modem is crap, doesn't like to connect any Apple products, Optus technical team can't fix this issue.
Purchased in July 2019.
Router works OK when it's working properly, but it gets slower and slower over the day. I have to reset it every day, so less than useless. Waiting for my TP Link router to arrive.
Purchased in June 2019 at Supplied by Optus.
Constant IP conflicts on different PC's,
QNAP NAS won't connect.
Can't set an IP address by MAC.
Poor equipment. LOL Optus Help says buy my own router.
Go elsewhere if you can!!
Purchased in January 2019.
- lack of connectivity, random spikes in pings, could possibly be due to the modem heating up
- easy to setup, standard modem
- lots of cables for households that requires connection and sufficient cables are supplied
-Proof of purchase attached to this review, part of Optus bundle that i pay on a month to month basis
Purchased in August 2017.
Nice modem but have to reset it sometimes. It has been working fine for more than a year (2 yrs of which I have been with Optus) though I had an option to upgrade to a new modem but I did not as it has been working fine. The Status LEDs are pretty accurate and help me to understand my connectivity.
Purchased in May 2017.
To experience constant drop outs in this day and age is unacceptable. This modem takes you back to 90's technology.
Stay well away from Optus and it's chosen modem it has caused us constant grief for 6 months and we have finally had enough!
Purchased in November 2018.
Changed from Optus-Cable to Optus-NBN-HFC 7 weeks ago, and got delivered one of these routers. Simply connected to Arris modem as installed by NBN, then personalised WiFi psw etc .
Has worked 100% for me (including 5GHz WiFi) with touch-wood, no lockups / dropouts (so far). The version is 3684 v3 HP - so maybe in this latest firmware, all the bugs that have upset others have been removed . . .
Purchased in March 2019.
So if you are thinking of switching to Optus or changing from a cable plan to NBN plan you will receive one of these routers, called a 'Gateway' by Optus. Mine doesn't resemble the pictures on the Optus help site, so there may be different looks for the same model - either way it is a very basic unit. Remember, with NBN, the modem is the small box that NBNCo install, this is then connected to the Sagemcom router / gateway. Aside from some very annoying connection issues from Optus and their very (I mean very very long) long wait times to get any phone or live chat support this unit seems to drop out regularly, i.e. no phone dial tone and/or no internet from time to time. Of course you only realize the phone is not working when you try to ring out (it is good however for reducing the junk calls you may get, because they can't get through either).
If you are swapping from a cable plan, insist on NOT going on to a contract if you can, at least this will enable you to pull the pin on Optus and the inept Sagemcom router sooner if you wish.
I don't really think this is an NBN problem although there are problems with the NBN like tech not showing up to connect / install the modem (mine was 90 minutes after the time slot allotted, my son had an NBN no show).
The problem I think is the cheap Sagemcom router provided by Optus, there are much better alternatives out there, but remember, before you go out and buy a new router thinking it will cure your problems, it may not if you have a connected telephone line as these now require a SIP code which may be difficult to extract from Optus. I would seriously consider another provider with a better gateway / router option before rushing to Optus. It's a bit of a pity but our old Optus cable speed was quicker for downloads but not a quick as the new NBN setup for uploads, a possible benefit if you upload a lot of large files perhaps.
Purchased in April 2019.
If you have signed up with Optus on your NBN network then chances are that you have received this modem (or router) as part of the deal. This modem looks good and is easy to setup. For me it was just plug and play.. no issues with setup. The web based interface is basic but sufficient for everyday use.
However, beware .. this modem locks up frequently and requires reboot quite frequently. In my case twice or three times a day. You do get full LAN and WiFi connection from the modem but not internet access when the unit locks up. So it seems that you are connected but can't access anything. Another problem with the unit is that the WiFi range is quite poor, in my case hardly few meters in the house.
This modem is terrible. It has poor range and not worth the hassle of set up. I will be returning it and getting a better one that has better range.
Purchased in February 2019 for $100.00.
A rubbish modem. Constantly have to reset it. Wifi a waste of time despite repeater.
Asked Optus for a better grade of modem but they dont have one.
Decided to replace it with a FRITZ!
Purchased in April 2018.
Functionalityusing it for a few weeks now and about 70% of the time the device has about 5% packet loss. This makes gaming and voice really poor. Otherwise basic admin of device is poor. Cant even add static IP through the GUI. Had to rely on someOptus and have had issues ever since with this piece of rubbish.
Purchased in September 2018.
So just for reference, I'm not a total newb and I am not just jumping on the bandwagon to bash this model or brand. First time I have heard of this brand Sagemcom I'm surprised Optus would go for a new brand instead of a well-named brand but all prejudices aside... let's get on with the review
For this router model, overall I would say I strongly dislike this router. Please continue to read on as to why:
1. I don't like it first of all as everyone else has pointed out you can't map static IP to a MAC address using the GUI, this means the modem or firmware was released without proper QA.... which gives you alot of assurance on other aspects of this hardware.... this is one of the most basic features most enthusiasts need to use. Lucky by googling you can find a webpage where a Legendary guy posts a workaround by entering code directly into the URL address bar (this actually works) which was quite satisfying but it shouldn't be like this. I can see alot of general pop without IT skills would not be able to do this.
2. First time I've switched to NBN not sure if the dropouts are from this router or this is how the NBN is meant to be? But yeah there's alot of dropouts at all times of the day.
3. Lastly, the biggest issue, this is driving me up the wall, the LAN ports where you plug in CAT5, 5e or CAT6 (ether) cabe of this router doesn't seem to work well. I mean the computer that connects to the LAN ports (there's 4 ports) have super slow internet and dropouts. This means you need to buy a wifi adaptor for a PC that's right next to the router?!?! wtf optus I'm not sure if others experienced this. This is the largest problem for me if you have a solution please email me: [contact details removed]
I hope optus offers a newer model of router for free or pay to cover the cost of me having to buy a new rounter atleast or partly pay for one, I think that's a reasonable request. This modem isn't workable.

Sagemcom 3864ACv3 is rubbish. I've been using it for a few weeks now and about 70% of the time the device has about 5% packet loss. This makes gaming and voice really poor. Otherwise basic admin of device is poor. Cant even add static IP through the GUI. Had to rely on some legend on the internet to devise a direct method of creating it. Simply terrible. Now trying to find a way to replace it! Wish Optus didnt inflict it upon us, the Telstra modem was 1000% better.
Purchased in February 2019 at optus.
I switched over to nbn in Oct 2017 on Optus and have had issues ever since with this piece of rubbish.
When I complained to Optus their final solution was run it via ethernet directly into the router. That may work for the desktop but I have a number of devices I need to run with wifi. Problem is I need the landline and am locked in for another 8 months. As soon as that is up I am switching to another provider, or just scrapping the landline altogether and gettign my own router.
Purchased in October 2017.

Have only just moved over to NBN and with it had to change to a free Sagecom router from Optus.
Internet connection by ethernet to PC is OK, but the Wi-Fi by comparison is inconsistent to all of my devices, whether PC, laptop or mobile phone.
None of this was a problem before I changed from a Netgear ADSL router.
Past experience with free Optus routers has been negative, so not really surprised.
Purchased in March 2019.
i thought it would be good but when i got it after 3 months of use it kept going slow and bad i would not recommend it for all time use but for part time use
Purchased in March 2014 at Thr1ve for $400.00.

Works fine a a wired lan router but I found my self having to restart the device once a week due to wifi dropping off. The wifi range is also not great but I could live with that if I didn't have to reboot the modem constantly. It was free from Optus so cant complain about the price.
This is a cheap nasty modem and it shows.
Optus told me to buy a wifi booster, they will cover the charge because they know the modem is so low in quality.
I have a 75mbps internet connection, but my 8mbps 4g connection feels faster.
I have had to buy a power line adaptor because the wifi quality is low, my tablets have a terrible experience and the only devices that get any satisfaction is over Ethernet.
