I just ran into an issue with the new ASA 5506 units where the 'show version' serial number is different than the serial number on the sticker on the outside. Since the sticker was used to register SMARTnet by the distributor when purchased, the ability to get support can be 'difficult' when you only have the 'show version' number.

I have a Cisco ASA5505 V11 firewall and would like to find out what the exact model is using the CLI since I only have a console cable avalible at the moment.
A show verison only gave me these informations:

The console will respond if configured correctly on the PC. You need to be set to 9600 baud and have Putty pointed at the right serial port. If you power-cycle the ASA it spits out lots of start-up messages to the console even if nothing is connected before it even loads the configuration so if you aren't seeing anything during power up you know you are on the wrong serial port. If you see gibberish you know you are at the wrong baud rate. Basically you are likely doomed until you get a serial console working so that is a prerequisite to further recovery.
