Unlike most of the portable office suites, SoftMaker FreeOffice 2012 requires to be installed first and then only create the portable version from the shortcut in Start menu. To be more accurate, SoftMaker FreeOffice ( which I use all the time & love it) can open & edit Microshaft -X documents, but can only save them in the earlier formats. To get full compatibility, you need to purchase the commercial version.

Other than this minor restriction, I have been using FreeOffice for years, & it does everything I need.

docx and other office – x versions,
and is quite small – about 80 MB,
and opens allmost instantly ( my post – june 2016) .
