Who’s actually going to run an old Java installer that’s been gathering dust in their Downloads folder? Hopefully no one, but you’d think that no one would be foolish enough to use 123456 for a password and we know how common that is.
It seems unlikely that any cybercriminal would waste time trying to trick someone into grabbing a .DLL when they could just as easily pass them a Trojanized executable. Nevertheless, Oracle is advising that you clean up your downloads folder (paying special attention to any random .DLL files you stumble upon) just to be on the safe side.
Soon, thankfully, this won’t be a situation anyone has to worry about anyways. Oracle recently announced that they’re killing off the Java plug-in. Yes, really! It’s been deprecated in version 9 of the JDK as Oracle pushes developers towards using Java Web Start instead.
